Huma Qureshi's crime thriller Baby Do Die Do looks set to reach streaming just over two months after it opened in cinemas on July 3. Netflix has placed the film in its "coming next week" section, but it hasn't announced an official premiere date. Some online reports guess between September 25 to October 2, though neither is confirmed.
Qureshi plays Baby Karmarkar, a deaf and mute contract killer who operates in Mumbai. Her past is marked by a hard childhood and the loss of her twin sister. As a string of killings draws the attention of the police and the media, the net slowly tightens around her. The film mixes action, dark humour and emotional drama, which sets it apart from the usual revenge thriller.
Nachiket Samant directs and shares story and writing credit with Parveez Shaikh and Jasmeet K Reen. The film is also a milestone for Qureshi, who makes her debut as a producer alongside her brother, Saqib Saleem. It is backed by their Saleem Siblings banner and Pune 04 Picture, and Saqib appears in the cast too. Chunky Panday and Sikandar Kher play key supporting roles.
The makers skipped the standard promotional playbook. Instead, they staged mock crime scenes in public places such as malls and metro stations, complete with chalk-style body outlines and a red umbrella that became the film's signature image. Reviews were largely positive.
Superstar, Ram Charan gave the film a welcome lift when he publicly praised the work of Qureshi and Saleem, calling it wonderful. His endorsement won the film fresh attention, though it wasn't enough to turn the theatrical run around.
