Munna Bhaiya Is Back From The Dead In Mirzapur: The Movie

Everything we know about the first Mirzapur film starring Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal and Divyenndu

If you've spent the last few years mourning Munna Tripathi, you can stop now. The first teaser for Mirzapur: The Movie dropped on Thursday, June 25, and the single most important thing it does is bring back Divyenndu's beloved, unhinged, seeti-maar gangster prince — a character the show killed off at the end of Season 2 and that fans have refused to let go of since.

To agree with the Twitter army in India, he was a character to goated they made a whole movie just to justify his return.

It's the first time the Mirzapur universe is walking into an actual cinema — and, as writer Puneet Krishna has pointed out, one of the first times a streaming show in India is being reworked into a feature film at all. And we just cannot wait to see how it turns out.

So What's Mirzapur: The Movie About?

For starters, it's a prequel. The film is set in 2018, before and alongside the events of Season 1. Munna and Bablu Pandit are alive; so are Satyanand "Bauji" Tripathi and Sweety Gupta. The timeline reset is giving a screen to all the characters we loved so much.

The teaser doesn't give away the plot, so we’ll just have to jump to our conclusions, pretty much.

What it does give away is the theme: fathers and sons, and all the ways they disappoint each other. Kaleen Bhaiya (Pankaj Tripathi) is once again side-eyeing his son Munna and quietly concluding he is not heir-to-the-throne material. On the other side of town, Guddu Pandit (Ali Fazal) is chasing a life of crime his own father very much does not approve of. Two families, two generations, one extremely bloody power vacuum. There’s the same sandbox of violence, gang rivalry and bhaukaal that made the show a phenomenon (just bigger, and on a much wider screen).

Mirzapur: The Movie Cast

Most of the gang's here. Pankaj Tripathi returns as Akhandanand "Kaleen" Tripathi, Ali Fazal as Guddu, Divyenndu as Munna, Shweta Tripathi as Gajgamini "Golu" Gupta, Rasika Dugal as Beena, Shriya Pilgaonkar as Sweety, and Kulbhushan Kharbanda as Bauji. Rajesh Tailang, Sheeba Chadha, Abhishek Banerjee, Mohitt Maalik and Harshita Shekhar Gupta are all back too.

However, Bablu Pandit, played by Vikrant Massey in Season 1, will now be played by Jitendra Kumar. Massey isn't reprising the role, so Jeetu bhaiya is stepping into one of the franchise's most loved early characters.

Ravi Kishan joins as a new gangster. Sonal S Chauhan also enters the universe.

Who's Behind It?

Mirzapur: The Movie is presented by Amazon MGM Studios and Excel Entertainment, directed by Gurmmeet Singh (who helmed the Prime Video show) and written by Puneet Krishna. It's produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under Excel Entertainment, with Kassim Jagmagia and Vishal Ramchandani co-producing.

Krishna, for what it's worth, says he always imagined Mirzapur as a film. He's also been candid that this whole show-to-movie leap is uncharted territory.

Mirzapur: The Movie: When And Where Can You Watch It?

Mirzapur: The Movie hits theatres on September 4, 2026, releasing in Hindi and Telugu. For context: the series first debuted on Amazon Prime Video in 2018, returned in 2020 and 2024, and has already been renewed for a fourth season — so the franchise isn't going anywhere.
