September 4 brings one of the year’s most eclectic theatrical lineups, led by Mirzapur: The Movie, an origin story of the franchise’s lawless underworld with its core cast returning and PVR INOX rebranding select sites as “MIRZAPVR.” Sharing the date are supersoldier thriller Onslaught, Arshad Warsi’s dark double-role comedy Jeevan Bheema Yojana, and family fantasy The Magic Faraway Tree.
Mirzapur fans have had September 4 circled on their calendars for months now, and it turns out the date is doing a lot more work than just delivering Mirzapur: The Movie to the big screen. The same Friday also brings Adam Wingard's supersoldier thriller Onslaught, Arshad Warsi's double-role comedy Jeevan Bheema Yojana, and the long-delayed Indian premiere of Enid Blyton's The Magic Faraway Tree, making this one of the more eclectic new Friday movie releases lineups cinemas have seen in recent memory. Gangster drama, monster horror, dark comedy and a gentle fairy tale, these 4 new Friday movie releases this week are wildly different and all are landing squarely on the same ticket window.
Check out these four films arriving in theatres on September 4:
* Mirzapur: The Movie
* Onslaught
* Jeevan Bheema Yojana
* The Magic Faraway Tree
Directed by Gurmmeet Singh, this origin chapter digs into the early power struggles of Mirzapur's lawless underworld, with Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Divyenndu Sharma and Rasika Dugal reprising the roles that built the franchise. PVR INOX has rebranded select cinemas as ‘MIRZAPVR’ for the launch, and early advance bookings have already crossed 11,000 tickets, a sign of how much weight this world still carries on the big screen after three streaming seasons.
Arshad Warsi takes on two sharply contrasting characters, Jeevan and his lookalike Bheema, in this dark comedy directed by Abhishek Dogra. Sanjeeda Shaikh plays Jeevan's wife Yojana, while Vijay Raaz adds menace as an insurance scam spirals into a diamond-smuggling mess involving dangerous underground figures. Jeevan Bheema Yojana was pushed back from an earlier August date so it could line up with this Friday's release instead.
Adam Wingard, the director behind The Guest and You're Next, returns to familiar genre territory with this A24 thriller starring Adria Arjona as an Army sniper protecting her young daughter from three escaped, genetically engineered super soldiers. Dan Stevens plays the German scientist responsible for creating them, and the film leans on the same desert-set, trailer-park tension that made Wingard's earlier work so distinctive.
Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy play parents whose three children discover a tree leading to fantastical worlds, in this warm-hearted adaptation of Enid Blyton's classic story. Nicola Coughlan voices Silky, one of the tree's most beloved residents, alongside Jessica Gunning as Dame Washalot. The film already opened in the UK back in March and the US in August, and its arrival in India completes a rollout that has taken most of the year.
