Google unveiled the Pixel Watch 5 alongside the Pixel 11 series at its event on August 12, and the watch is now up for pre-order in India. On paper, the changes look substantial: offline Gemini, doubled GPS accuracy, a breathing emergency detector that can call for help on its own. Here’s everything that separates the Pixel Watch 5 from its predecessor.

Design: a familiar shell, a safer band

Google hasn't touched the exterior. The Pixel Watch 5 has the same domed Actua 360 display, rounded case, and two size options as its predecessor (45mm and 41 mm), with peak brightness holding at 3,000 nits. Four colour finishes are available, namely Fog, Olive,  Canyon, and Obsidian.

The good news here is that Google has swapped the default Sport Band's fluoroelastomer for HNBR, a nitrile-based, medical-grade rubber. Fluoroelastomer bands (used on Apple's Sport and Ocean bands, and on the Pixel Watch 4's original band) have been linked to elevated PFAS levels, the so-called forever chemicals tied to long-term health risks. It won't show up on a spec sheet, but it's arguably the most meaningful material change on the watch.

As for the watch face, you can now create your own AI-generated watch faces through Gemini, although traditional watch face options still exist.

Performance: more RAM, double the storage, one faster chip

The Pixel Watch 5 runs an accelerated version of the Snapdragon W5 Gen 2, the same chip family as the Watch 4 but tuned for extra headroom. RAM climbs from 2GB to 3GB, and storage doubles from 32GB to 64GB. Google claims a 12 per cent CPU bump and a 20 per cent overall performance gain in the Pixel Watch 5, so your apps switch faster, and Gemini replies much more quickly.

Gemini learns to work offline, finally

This is the biggest update on the watch. Gemini on the Pixel Watch 5 can handle core actions (setting timers, starting workouts, pulling basic information) without an internet connection, a feature that Pixel Watch 4 wearers have been asking for some time now. Raise-to-talk voice commands, a double-pinch gesture for confirming or sending replies, and a new Proactive Suggestions feature that surfaces context on its own (a dinner reservation pulled from Gmail, a family dinner time pulled from your calendar) round out the AI upgrades. An At a Glance mode adds boarding passes and commute countdowns to the watch face automatically.

However, these features will not stay limited to the Watch 5 and later releases. Google has confirmed most of these Gemini features, along with the rest of Wear OS 7 (live Maps ETAs on the watch face, dynamic colour complications, new widgets), are headed to the Pixel Watch 4 through a software update.

GPS gets a proper hardware boost

Here's a change that does depend on new hardware. Google says the Pixel Watch 5's dual-band GPS, combined with 3D building models from Google Maps and data from weather reference stations, doubles route-tracking accuracy over the previous generation; this is especially true for dense areas where tall buildings interfere with satellite signals. The company claims this beats the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and the Garmin Fenix 8 Pro on tracking accuracy, but hey, that’s marketing terms up to you to decide when you get your hands on it.

Health Guardian adds a breathing emergency detector

The Pixel Watch 5 adds a new capability into Google's existing Health Guardian suite, which already covers irregular heart rate alerts, high and low heart rate warnings, and Loss of Pulse Detection from the Watch 4. The new Breathing Emergency Detection uses the optical heart rate sensor, accelerometer, and barometer, combined with on-device AI, to watch for severe, sustained drops in oxygen saturation from causes like drug toxicity, severe pneumonia, or choking. If it detects an emergency alongside an unresponsive wearer, the watch calls emergency services and shares the wearer's location on its own.

Here’s the catch, though. The feature launches in Europe first, and availability elsewhere depends on regulatory clearance, so there's no confirmed India timeline yet.

Google is also rolling out monthly trend summaries for blood pressure, sleep breathing quality, and insulin resistance, built on health models trained on sensor data from opted-in users. But these are not clinical readings, and the first report only arrives after a full month of wear.

Sleep and strength training get smarter

Sleep tracking improves by a reported 15 per cent in stage-detection accuracy, alongside a dedicated bedtime watch face, bedtime automations, and Smart Wake, which times your alarm to a lighter sleep stage. A new Sleep Breathing Quality metric tracks overnight blood oxygen changes.

On the fitness side, an on-device strength training mode (coming in a future update) will guide users through sets and rest periods without needing a phone in hand, while Google Health Coach builds routines using recovery data like sleep and heart rate variability.

Battery life and pricing

Continuing what the Watch 4 offered, battery is rated up to 30 hours on the 41mm and 40 hours on the 45mm, with fast charging support on both. This generation's gains sit mostly in software efficiency rather than a bigger cell.

In India, the Pixel Watch 5 costs ₹42,900 for the 41mm and ₹45,900 for the 45mm, up from the Watch 4's ₹39,900 launch price. Pre-orders opened on August 12, with stores stocking it from August 20.
