The Snoafer Is Back: 5 Must-Have Sneaker-Loafers Every Man Needs in 2026

A couple of years ago, the word “snoafer” would have sounded like a footwear joke. Now, it has become a full-fledged category on its own. The sneaker-loafer started appearing in earnest around 2019, when Reebok collaborated with London label Cottweiler on one and Maison Margiela produced its own version. But the frenzy began in 2024, when New Balance turned its 1906R into the 1906L. And now Adidas has given its 1979 Handball Spezial a loafer makeover.

The shoe's look-- depending on your personal tolerance for fashion nonsense, is either brilliantly weird or looks like two perfectly respectable shoes had been forced into a shotgun wedding. It was a sneaker-loafer lovechild. Alas! Snoafer.

It was a valid question then and even now, 'do we need to combine two shoes that already work perfectly well on their own?'. A traditional loafer tends to make even a simple outfit look more dressed up than you may have intended, while a sneaker can pull things much further towards casual. A good chunk of people loved the idea that putting the two together gave you a rather perfect middle ground. You could have the polish of a loafer without looking like you had made a full commitment to dressing up, and still wear it with a sleek streetwear outfit, oversized trousers or a pair of relaxed jeans without the shoe looking completely out of place. That is probably why the supposedly 'ugly' shoe kept selling.

New Balance, of course, wasn't going to have the field to itself for very long. Hoka soon gave the idea its own chunky interpretation with the Speed Loafer, Puma followed with the Sophyr, and Nike put its most recognisable spin on the formula with the Air Max Phenomena. Even Crocs got involved with the Gallery Shoe, which feels like a fairly good indication that the snoafer had graduated from a weird little fashion experiment into a convenient staple.

Now with The Adidas Handball Spezial Loafer taking one of the brand's most recognisable terrace shoes and giving it a proper loafer upper, snoafers seem to be making a solid comeback. The Handball Spezial began life in 1979 as an indoor sports shoe, before becoming one of Adidas's most fashionable low-profile sneakers. For this version, the familiar athletic proportions are paired with a penny-loafer-style strap, leather or suede uppers, the serrated Three Stripes and the Spezial's unmistakable gum sole.

The black version, officially called the Handball Spezial Loafer “Core Black”, is probably the easiest place to understand what Adidas is doing. Smooth black leather, white Three Stripes, piping around the toe, a small metallic Trefoil detail and that brownish gum sole give it enough loafer DNA to give the snoafer argument an edge. Adidas also has suede versions in brown and beige.

It's not too hard to style these either. Start with jeans, but make them a little more relaxed than your usual pair. Straight-leg or wider denim lets the loafer's shape come through.

If you prefer trousers, a pair of pleated, wide-leg pants works just as well. The point is to give the shoe enough space so it doesn't squeeze it into the narrow, formal trousers you might normally wear with loafers. You could also swap your jeans for a pair of tailored or pleated jorts, add a sweatshirt and finish with clean white socks. You get that casual-formal sandwich.

The other thing worth remembering is that you do not have to style a snoafer as though you are trying to prove a point. Give it clean lines, good proportions and one slightly unexpected element. They might seem like an unnecessary addition to your rotation, but once they become part of it, just sort of find a place for themselves.
