Finally, House Of The Dragon Ends With Season 4

So, how are you holding up after that Alicent/Alys-Aemon scene from House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 7? Or, if you're reading this after the finale is out, what are your thoughts on this season? Because if they're not good (which, obviously, is the sentiment of the majority), fear not. House of the Dragon ends with Season 4. And it's coming out sooner than you think. Good news? Maybe, maybe not. But hey, at least you can get done and dusted with this show once and for all. Here's what we know about the final chapter.

House of the Dragon season 4 isn't some fresh twist. Showrunner Ryan Condal first discussed this back in August 2024, right after the season 2 finale, that the show would wrap after four seasons total. He's said it again since. Except that what actually changed is that HBO stopped letting him say it alone: the final season became official in January 2026, months before season 3 even premiered.

When Can We Actually Expect Season 4?

So, the creators have said that it should be out by 2028, which is only two years away. But generally, for the new season to drop that soon, filming for season four shuld have begun by now. As per reports, the writers only presented the script to HBO this March, so it does seem to be a little behind schedule.

That being said, Condal and other executives have been insistent on finishing teh show by the 2028 period, so maybe, there's not a lot happening in season 4 after all. That would mean a major deviation from the book as a lot of the major events of Fire and Blood are still left, but then again, HBO's show has already deviated a lot from G.R.R. Martin;s books anyway.

What Will Season 4 (Hopefully) Cover?

The short version: everything that's left of the war. Martin has said previously that telling the Dance of the Dragons properly, the way he wrote it, needs four seasons of ten episodes each. House of the Dragon has kept every season at eight regardless, which means season 4 walks in with a lot of story- The Battle of The God's Eye, the Storming of Dragonpit and teh Fall of King's Landing being only the major plots here, with too little screentime to cover them all.

Either way, expect it to finally settle things for Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy), Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith), Alicent, Aegon II Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney), Aemond, and whoever else is still standing by then, along with the actual point of the whole war: who's left to sit the Iron Throne once the dragons are done dying.

What Else Is Coming From Westeros

You're not stuck with nothing until 2028, at least. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms returns for season 2 in 2027. Season 1 has been so good that it made it to our best shows of the year list (check it out below). On the other hand, HBO is also developing a Game of Thrones film built around Aegon's Conquest, the war that put the Targaryens on the Westerosi throne and brought the dragons to the realm after the doom of Valyria.
