Major Box Office Clashes To Watch Out For In Second Half Of 2026

History shows that whenever there's a major box-office clash, there's a lot of hype and buzz surrounding both films. Be it Lagaan vs Gadar - Ek Prem Katha in 2001, Om Shanti Om vs Saawariya in 2007, or Dilwale vs Bajirao Mastani in 2015. Because of limited screens, there's a lot of last-minute tussle to secure the best possible screenings for the film, and fans and trade experts are always excited to see which film would emerge as the winner, at least at the box office.

The second half of 2026 has a lot of major box office clashes set up. Let's take a closer look at each of them.

Ironically, the two stars (Aamir Khan and Sunny Deol) who clashed at the box office in the summer of 2001 (Lagaan vs Gadar) are collaborating as producer and actor on Batwara 1947, directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. But even though they have joined forces, they have a new opponent to face in Emraan Hashmi's much-awaited sequel, Awarapan 2.

Awarapan 2 appears to have the edge in pre-release buzz, but when it comes to clashes, word of mouth emerges as the ultimate decider. Interestingly, Shabana Azmi stars in both Awarapan 2 and Batwara 1947.

This is not just 2 but 3 films going against each other during the same weekend. Yash's much-delayed and anticipated Toxic is set for a August 26 release, followed by Vvan and Eetha on August 28. Eetha stars Shraddha Kapoor and is produced by Dinesh Vijan, while Vvan stars Sidharth Malhotra and Tamannaah Bhatia and is produced by Ektaa Kapoor.

Being the biggest of the three, Toxic actually has the most to lose in this clash. It is a film mounted on a massive scale and would need as many screens as possible to reach its full potential, and both Vvan and Eetha could take some of its share.

Even though both of these are Tamil-language films, Indian cinema fans are still excited about this clash as they are still major films with high expectations. Sardar 2 is led by Karthi, while Demonte Colony 3, as the name suggests, is a threequel to the very successful Demonte Colony franchise.

This is not just an Indian but a global clash. Both these Hollywood juggernauts are targeting the same lucrative Christmas release period. People are comparing this clash to the Barbie vs Oppenheimer clash in 2023, but that benefited both films because of counter-programming.

Here, both Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three are mostly targeting the same crowd. And even though Avengers: Doomsday has more four-quadrant appeal, the Dune series has also become a highly beloved franchise over the years. The most interesting part about this clash is that, due to a deal between Dune: Part Three and IMAX, Avengers: Doomsday will not be getting any IMAX screens in the USA for the first three weeks.

And the last major clash of Indian cinema for this year will be between King, headlined by Shah Rukh Khan, and Shakti Shalini, headlined by Aneet Padda. While King is an action-thriller directed by Pathaan director Siddharth Anand, Shakti Shalini is part of the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe and will be directed by Aditya Sarpotdar, who previously directed Munjya (part of the same universe).

Being a big-scale action-thriller led by Shah Rukh Khan, King is undoubtedly a massive event film. But Shakti Shalini has its strengths too. It is a part of the highly successful Maddock Horror Comedy Universe that has given audiences blockbusters such as Stree, Stree 2, and Munjya.
