Minecraft is easily one of the world’s most famous games, so when news broke that an official film was finally in the works, fans of the game were thrilled, to say the least.

A Minecraft Movie, directed by Jared Hess, is the first-ever big-screen, live-action adaptation of Minecraft and finally releases in cinemas today. Produced by Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, the film stars Jason Momoa and Jack Black in the lead roles. It also features Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge.

The film follows four misfits - Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers), and Dawn (Brooks) - who find themselves struggling in their daily lives when they are suddenly pulled into the Overworld through a mysterious portal. What is the Overworld? A cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. The only way for them to return home is to master this new world while also embarking on a magical quest with expert crafter, Steve (Black).

Of course, Black has been involved in his films’ music, and this one is no different. Along with Hess, Black co-wrote (and performs) an ode to his character Steve’s entrepreneurial side, Steve’s Lava Chicken. He also collaborated with Jason Momoa and John Spiker on ‘Birthday Rap’, a hilarious distraction that features in a key sequence in the film, as well as Ode to Dennis, a song for his best wolf friend.

The filmmakers also brought in Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt - whose most recent success was the huge hit I’m Just Ken from Barbie - and approached Black to contribute lyrics to one of the film’s biggest original numbers.

“I was like, ‘Oh my God, I’m on a collab with The Fabulous Baker Boys,’” laughs Jack Black when asked about his involvement with the film’s music and lyrics. “I threw some lyrics in there, and they put the finishing touches on, and it’s so catchy—a real toe-tapper. That’s what you want at the end of a movie - it’s a real fun celebration. Me and Momoa, and the whole cast - Danielle, Sebastian, and Emma - we’re all dancing and singing, and it’s just a rad way to end the movie and go to credits.”

A Minecraft Movie is set to release in 3D & IMAX 3D in India in English and Hindi.
