IND vs AFG T20I Series 2026: Team India is set to face Afghanistan in a three-match T20I series starting Sunday. The 1st IND vs AFG match will be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi from 7 p.m. IST onwards. This series, along with the one-off match against Japan in Tokyo on September 22, serves as ideal preparation for the team ahead of the Asian Games 2026.
The series will mark the return of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who has been sidelined since India's ODI tour of England in July due to a left knee injury. Alongside Bumrah, all-rounders Nitish Reddy and Washington Sundar have also been cleared for the T20I series and the Asian Games while Yash Thakur has replaced injured bowler Harshit Rana.
It will be a stern test for India's batters against a world-class spin attack featuring Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmad and Mujeeb-ur-Rahman. Afghanistan's seam attack, comprising Fazalhaq Farooqi, Naveen-ul-Haq and all-rounders Gulbadin Naib and Azmatullah Omarzai, can pose a few problems if the Delhi pitch offers assistance to the bowlers.
The playing XI chosen by captain Shreyas Iyer and coach Gautam Gambhir will be one to watch, especially the opening pair with Sanju Samson, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Abhishek Sharma all in contention.
The other talking point in India's XI will be the spin combination. With Gautam Gambhir's known preference for all-rounders, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar are expected to feature. The question is whether India will go with a third specialist spinner in Varun Chakaravarthy or a specialist seamer in Yash Thakur. Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh are automatic picks.
